Educational Loans for Lecturers in Hotel and Restaurant Management

Strathmore University

Training of Trainers

october 2014 - october 2020

Strathmore University in Nairobi has its origins in a business school founded in 1966.  After achieving independence, Kenya was in dire need of qualified civil servants and business people, to compensate for the withdrawal of British colonial officials.  For this reason, the focus of Strathmore, then as well as now, is economic studies.  In 2002, Strathmore earned university status.  It has since added social sciences and information technology to its business and law faculties.

Gastronomy and tourism are important income sources for Kenya.  The University acknowledges this by offering university education in this field.  This training is in high demand.  But Kenya does not have enough qualified instructors to teach the growing number of students at the targeted quality of instruction.

To improve the qualification of lecturers at the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality, the Limmat Foundation increased a revolving fund in 2014.  The Limmat Training Fund grants educational loans to rising lecturers in the field of hospitality Management at Strathmore University.  The scholarship recipients repay the loan after they complete their studies, making the funding available for the next round of students.

In order to determine the impact on beneficiaries (and hence the effectiveness of a project) Swissocial is measuring on a prospective study  the changes in the living conditions of beneficiaries, before and after the intervention by means of a valid instrument. For such measurements Swissocial uses the methodology of the Social and Economic Welfare Index (SEWI).
