One for a boy, One for a girl,
A violin can change the world.

Financed by the Vareille Foundation, this is a 5-year music project being implemented in Martigny Kindergarten in Switzerland, initially targeting children aged 4 years old.

One of the objectives of the Vareille Foundation is to introduce classical music to children.

“A violin can change the world” is a pilot project that aims to achieve this through teaching children how to play the violin in their early school years, in support of the integration of music classes in the elementary curriculum. Each child is provided with their own violin to take home and practice, therefore also involving their family in music education. The premise is that children exposed to music education will not only develop a genuine interest in music, but that this will also result in an improvement in their development, academic performance, and learning capacity through helping them to develop discipline and concentration. Overall, this will increase their motivation to progress. In addition, it enables active participation by the children’s families in the school community.

In order to measure the effectiveness of the approach used by the project, Swissocial is quantitatively assessing the impact of the project on the beneficiaries. This involves evaluating the effects of learning the violin at an early age on their personal and social development, including learning of other disciplines.

The Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI), the impact measurement tool for use in projects where children are the primary beneficiaries, is being used to evaluate the project.  The ECDI uses 9 indicators to quantitatively determine the different changes (intended and unintended; positive or negative) experienced by the beneficiaries that are directly or indirectly attributable to the project.

The nine indicators used are the following:

  1. Physical - coordination of fine and gross physical movements

  2. Sensor-perceptive (tactile, superficial and deep), proprioceptive, vestibular and visual senses

  3. Cognitive ability

  4. Math, language and reading skills

  5. Music skills

  6. Extra and intra familiar behavior

  7. Intra personal factors– self-esteem and ego

  8. Family dynamics – level of community involvement (school)

  9. Inter-personal behavior – communication skills
